Growing a business comes with enough moving parts - health and safety shouldn't be one of the unknowns. Below are answers to common questions small business owners have about their obligations, growth triggers, and how to stay organized as they expand.

Do small business owners in Ontario need a Health and Safety Program?

Yes. As soon as you hire even one worker, the Occupational Health and Safety Act applies. The level of structure required depends on your workforce size and industry.

What if I'm the only person working in my business?

If you are truly the only worker, most formal requirements do not apply yet. However, planning ahead makes hiring smoother and avoids scrambling later.

When do I need a health and safety representative?

If you have 6-19 workers, you are required to designate a Health and Safety Representative.

Do I need a Joint Health and Safety Committee?

Only if you have 20 or more workers.

No. Employers remain responsible under the OHSA. We provide guidance, clear structure and programs to help you stay protected.

Do you replace employer responsibility?

Yes. Clients are free to manage the next steps internally. Ongoing support is optional.

Can I implement recommendations myself?

No. Our assessments are structured reviews designed to help you organize and strengthen your system. We are not inspectors. We work with small businesses to grow a safe and productive workplace.

What training is required for small businesses?

At minimum:

WHMIS (if hazardous products are used in the workplace)
Workplace violence and harassment training
Supervisor awareness

The training must be documented.

Do I need WSIB if I only have one employee?

In most industries, yes. In construction, even owner-operators may require coverage.

How often should I review my safety program?

At least annually, or whenever operations or staffing change.
